Wassily Kandinsky was born into a genteel family on Dec. 4, 1866 in Moscow, Russia. He traveled widely and studied law and economics, but always had a passion for color. In 1896, he turned down an offer to teach and went to Germany to pursue painting. He

After successful avant-garde exhibitions, he founded the influential Munich group Der Blaue Reiter (“The Blue Rider”; 1911–14) and began completely abstract painting. His forms evolved from fluid and organic to geometric and, finally, to pictographic (e.g., Tempered lan, 1944).
